INDIANAPOLIS – A stellar season came to an end for the NorthWood doubles duo of Brant Mast and Jared Hoffman Friday afternoon.

The pair lost in straight sets in a quarterfinal match of the State Finals at Park Tudor High School.

The Hamilton Southeastern team of seniors Mark Slaninka and Andrew Myers beat seniors Mast and Hoffman 6-1, 6-0.

Slaninka and Myers improve to 17-9 on the season and advance to a semifinal match Saturday at 10 a.m. back at Park Tudor.

Mast and Hoffman, the first State qualifiers in the history of the boys tennis program at NorthWood, cap a tremendous final season with a record of 25-3. The pair won both the NLC Tournament title and then both sectional and regional championships in the state tourney series for No. 1 doubles teams to earn a berth at State.

NorthWood coach Tif Schwartz pointed to nerves as a definite factor Friday.

“I felt like we played with a lot of nerves today and just couldn’t ever shake them,” said Schwartz via text message late Friday night. “We warmed up great, but just got nervous to start and never broke through them.

“When we got into rallies with them we were able to hit with them, but struggled in getting the points started.

“It was a great run for Brant and Jared. They were bummed to not play their best tennis today, but very happy with their season.”

Mast and Hoffman lost to Warsaw and East Noble, each in three sets, during the regular season. The duo came back to top the Tigers in the NLC Tourney title match in straight sets and then beat the East Noble team, also in two sets, in a sectional match.

Slaninka and Myers will face seniors Will Emhardt and Drew Wiegel of Park Tudor in one semifinal. Emhardt and Wiegel are 14-5. The other semifinal will pit the Floyd Central team of senior Noah Neuhauser and sophomore Alex Poe versus senior Dane Hueston and Matt Etherington of Alexandria Monroe. The Floyd Central team is 22-5, while the Alexandria Monroe duo sports a 26-0 mark.

The championship match is Saturday at 2 p.m.
