The following events are upcoming at the Milford Public Library:

TEEN READ WEEK
Teen Read Week is a time to celebrate reading for fun while encouraging teens to take advantage of reading in all its forms including books, magazines, e-books, audiobooks and more.  It is also a great time to encourage teens to become regular library users.  Strong reading skills are more critical than ever because they translate into better performance at school and better preparedness for careers.  This is why it is important to take advantage of Teen Read Week and show teens that reading is a fun and relaxing activity they can do for free. 

Milford Public Library invites teens, parents and other concerned community members to visit the library during Teen Read Week, Oct. 8-14.  Teens who visit will be able to enter a drawing for a prize.  The drawing will be on Friday, Oct. 13.

LIGHTS OUT AT THE LIBRARY
Take a tour through the 13th annual Lights Out at the Library from 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31. This year’s theme is “2017 Time to Celebrate!”  This year marks special anniversaries for several well-known books, movies, musicians and authors. 

For example, did you know that the first Star Wars movie is celebrating its 40th anniversary? Little did George Lucas know that his movie would entertain generations of fans for more than 40 years.  Beloved author, Laura Ingalls Wilder, would have celebrated her 150th birthday on Feb. 7 of this year.  Wilder’s books inspired the television series, Little House on the Prairie, which is still in syndication today.  Did you love the Where’s Waldo books?  The first book was published May 16, 1987, thirty years ago.  People enjoyed looking for Waldo in all kinds of situations.  These are just a few of the pop culture icons we will celebrate on Halloween. 

Line up for the tour at the Main Street doors. About 15 people will go on the tour at a time.  Father Time will be the guide.  Any child completing the tour will be given a Halloween treat.  Mark your calendars to come to the most popular program of the year!
 
CELEBRATE BIRTHDAYS AT STORY TIME

Children ages 3-6 are invited to come and listen to great stories, make fun crafts and enjoy delicious, nutritious snacks during story time. Story time is an excellent time to introduce a preschool child to the love of reading. Visiting the library is a good habit to develop. They will meet new friends and experience the fun of listening to stories that are varied in their characters, cultures and adventures. The library has added independent activities the preschool children can do every week that have a story time tie-in. These activities are set up in the children’s department. Please let us know if your children benefit from and enjoy these independent activities.

VIRTUAL STORY TIME

Watch the Milford Public Library Facebook page every Monday for virtual Story Time videos. Director Julie Frew and Kaitlyn Arford will read one favorite story to children each week. Be sure to “like” and “share” the video with your friends and family.  Anyone can watch and enjoy our virtual story time!

BOARD MEETING

Milford Public Library’s Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 16. Anyone in the public is welcome to attend to learn how the library functions and to be updated on current events.

LAPSIT

Bring your child under the age of three to Lapsit at Milford Public Library Tuesdays in October. The library’s youngest patrons will enjoy stories and finger play that introduces them to literature and prepares them for school environments. The theme this fall is apples. Lapsit meets at 11 a.m. on Oct. 17 and Oct. 24, in the meeting room.
