CULVER — Ethan Berry converted on a 10-yard run in overtime, and Triton bounced back from its first loss of the year with a come-from-behind, 27-21 Hoosier North Athletic Conference thriller in Culver Friday.
Berry’s game-winner was his second TD run of the night after he put the Trojans on the board with an 8-yard run in the first quarter. Culver responded with three straight scores — a 29-yard touchdown completion from Lance Keller to Kaleb Jones in the second period and touchdown runs of 6 and 21 yards by Kia Riale and Ryan Tompos in the third — to seize a 21-6 lead going into the fourth period.
Triton rallied with a pair of touchdown runs by quarterback Bo Snyder, the first a 3-yarder and the second from 2 yards out to knot the game up with a two-point conversion and set the stage for Berry’s late heroics.
The Cavs held the advantage on the ground with 279 rushing yards compared to just 81 by the Trojans, but Snyder and Triton were better through the air as the junior quarterback went 13-of-27 for 138 yards, and Tompos went 2 of 5 for 42 passing yards and a touchdown with two interceptions as Culver turned the ball over four times compared to only one turnover by Triton.
Tye Orsund reeled in four catches for 67 yards, and Berry and Delano Shumpert caught three passes apiece for 38 and 20 yards, respectively. Berry also recorded 33 rushing yards in six carries behind Max Slusser’s 36 yards in six runs.
Slusser led the defense with eight tackles ahead of Lee Mullett’s six and five apiece from Orsund and Drew Stichter. Orsund and Berry recorded Triton’s two picks in the win.
Tompos needed only 16 carries to rush for 146 yards for Culver, and Riale also reached the century mark with 103 yards in 24 rushes.
Culver slips to 3-2 and 1-2 in the HNAC, while Triton improves to 4-1 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 3-0. The Trojans play another unbeaten HNAC opponent next week in undefeated Class A No. 1 Pioneer on the road in Royal Center.
