Mary Priscilla Burkett

Mary Priscilla (Powell) Burkett, 95 formerly of Argos, and currently of Rushville, died Sept. 12, 2017 at Our Hospice in Columbus, due to failing health. She was born Nov. 9, 1921 to Loda (Dowds) and Glen Powell in Macy.

Priscilla graduated from Macy High School with the class of 1939 and Indianapolis City Hospital school of Nursing in 1943.

She then volunteered for the U.S. Army Nurse Corps where she served for 2 ½ years at Ashford General Hospital, White Sulpher Springs, W. Va.; Fort Knox, Ky.; and on the islands of Tinian and Saipan before returning home on Christmas Eve 1945. She was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant in 1946.

In 1950 she married Devon Burkett, who preceded her in death in 1986. She loved nursing – working for Dr. James Hampton; Dr. Ralph Rea; and specialing relatives hospitalized. She was the school nurse for Argos Community Schools for 21 years before retiring in 1986.

Priscilla is survived by her daughter, Cathy Burkett of Rushville, and Jim (Debbie) Burkett of Argos; three granddaughters, Jennifer (Aaron) Hutchison; Katie Burkett and Megan  Burkett; three great granddaughters and two great grandsons. She is preceded in death by her parents, Husband, and Brothers – Cecil Powell and Kenneth Powell.

She was a member of Park Side Church in Argos where she served as financial secretary for over 20 years, Missionary Review Society and Walnut Ruralettes Extension Homemaker Club.

Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, Sept. 17 from 4 – 8 pm at the Parkside Community Church, 225 S. Michigan St., Argos, Indiana

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Parkside Community Church.
Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Argos, Indiana

Thank you to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana for the wonderful care she received. Also thank you to the Rush County Health Department for their care given to her.

Memorials may be given to Park Side Church, Our Hospice, Indy Honor Flight.org or the Salvation Army.

Arrangements are being handled by Earl-Grossman Funeral Home in Argos.
