Warsaw Soccer: Boys Claim Tourney Title
FORT WAYNE – The Warsaw boys soccer team earned a championship Saturday.
The Tigers picked up a pair of wins to claim the top spot in the Carroll Classic.
Warsaw edged past conference foe Northridge by a 3-2 final in the championship match in a back-and-forth contest.
The Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the title game before a goal pff a penalty kick by Blake Burns tied it. Northridge then led 2-1 before Tedros Berelsman scored for the Tigers to knot the game once again.
The Tigers earned the 3-2 win in the finale on a goal by Burns, assisted by Cole Voss. The Raiders had a chance to tie the game later on a penalty kick chance, but keeper Harrison Mevis stopped the shot for Warsaw.
Coach Frank Courtois’ Tigers got past Homestead in the semifinals earlier on Saturday. The game was tied at 0-0 before Warsaw won in a shoot out. Scoring for the Tigers in the shoot out were Burns, Voss, Berelsman, Eric O’cock and Luis Cleto. Mevis was strong in goal for the winners.
Warsaw improves to 5-3-2 overall on the season.
The Tigers will play at conference foe Elkhart Memorial tonight (Tuesday). The JV game is at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity match to follow. Warsaw is 0-2 in NLC play on the season.
