NorthWood Sports Wrap: Aug. 29
Girls Golf
The streak just keeps going and going and going for the NorthWood girls golf program.
The Panthers powered their way to two more Northern Lakes Conference wins.
Senior Madison Richner led the way as NorthWood topped Warsaw and host Goshen in a league triangular at the Maplecrest Country Club.
Richner earned medalist honors with a 42 as the Panthers shot 184 to remain undefeated. Warsaw shot 204 and Goshen 236.
NorthWood has now won 41 straight NLC matches dating back to the 2011 season. Coach Adam Yoder’s outstanding program has won the title outright or shared it in league play the past five years.
Abby Slabaugh shot a 46 and Mackenzie Weaver a 47 for the deep Panthers, who are 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the NLC. Abigail Richner had a 49 and Makenna Gall a 51 for the winners.
Delaney Wihebrink led Warsaw with a 49. Madelyn Ray had a 50, while Miriam Hagg shot 52 for the Tigers. Grayson Kilburn shot a 53 and Izzy Ray a 59.
Warsaw goes to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the NLC.
Olivia Thomas led Goshen with a 53. The RedHawks are 0-7 overall and 0-6 in the NLC.
The NorthWood junior varsity shot a 206, while Warsaw was at 245 and Goshen 289.
Kirsten Schrock led the NorthWood JV with a 49. Hope Cripe had a 50 with Kylee Gall at 51 and Delaney Davis 56.
Anna Morgan led the Warsaw JV unit with a 59. Julia Hildebrand shot a 60 with Cassidy Good at 61, Brooklyn Fitzgerald 65 and Valerie Messmore 68.
Estella Borden led the Goshen JV with a 60.
NorthWood hosts Plymouth and Elkhart Memorial Thursday to wrap up NLC play. Warsaw hosts Concord and Northridge in league action, also on Thursday
The NLC Tournament is set for Sept. 9 at Pretty Lake in Plymouth.
Cross Country
The NorthWood girls cross country team picked up a conference win over Plymouth.
Erica Stutsman claimed top honors in a time of 21:49 as the hosts beat the Pilgrims 19-44 in the Northern Lakes Conference matchup.
Ella Hisong of Plymouth was second in 22:03 to pace the Pilgrims.
The Panthers then took spots 3-9 in the meet. Breanne Resler was third for NorthWood in 22:25, followed by teammates Megan Miller (22:31), Ariana Runge (22:36), Laura Schlock (22:36), Abigail Vohis (23:02), Reese Barhydt (23:15) and Karlie Fielstra (23:38).
Amanda Jenkins was 12th overall in a time of 24:39 for the winners. Molly Smith was 15th in 25:53, with McKynze Miller 17th (26:36), Hannah Eberle 18th (27:28), Lydia Schmitt 19th (32:18) and Natalie Venable 20th (32:430 for the Panthers.
Plymouth edged the Panthers 27-30 on the boys’ side.
Tyler Evers of the Panthers took top honors as he won the race in 17:44.
Plymouth took second through fourth to earn the team win.
Barrett Myers was fifth overall for NorthWood in 18:06. Arron Smith was seventh overall for the hosts in 18:58 with Austin Escamilla eighth in 19:07, Stephen Schmidt ninth in 19:17 and Daniel Hochstetler 10th in 19:18 for the Panthers.
NorthWood is off until hosting Northridge and Wawasee next Tuesday night in league action. It will be Senior Night for the two programs.
Girls Soccer
Kali Parisi registered the hat trick to pace the NorthWood girls soccer team to victory.
Parisi booted home all three goals as the hosts blanked South Bend Trinity 3-0 in a non-conference matchup.
Parisi scored once in the first half, assisted by Betsy Nunemaker. She then scored in both the 62nd and 63rd minutes in the second half to finish off the three-goal effort.
NorthWood outshot Trinity 19-4 and had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Goalie Kira Robinson had four saves for the Panthers.
NorthWood improves to 5-1, while Trinity drops to 2-4.
NorthWood hosts Northridge in conference play Thursday night.
Volleyball
The NorthWood volleyball team made quick work of host LaVille.
Kennedy Wiens slammed down 16 kills to power the Panthers to a 25-16, 25-6, 25-14 win in the non-conference match.
Haylee Pennington added eight kills for the winners. Courtney Lengacher had five aces and Wiens three.
Whitney Gessinger had 17 digs and Lengacher 10. Alexis Klotz had two blocks and Lengacher 35 assists.
The NorthWood junior varsity won 25-20, 25-20. Riley Graber had five kills and six aces, while Kate Rulli had four kills and four aces and Alea Minnich four kills and seven digs to pace the winners.
NorthWood hosts Concord in a huge conference match Thursday night.
