WARSAW — The city of Warsaw is seeking ambitious, self-motivated high school students with a strong desire to make a difference in their community to serve on an all new committee alongside city officials. The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council invites young adults to share their unique perspectives on how to improve the city while offering an opportunity to develop leadership skills.

The MYAC will be comprised of a team of young adults representing various perspectives of the city of Warsaw. By participating in the MYAC, young adults will be able to develop leadership skills while working in conjunction with the mayor, city council and other local government departments as they serve as a forum for the young adults of the city of Warsaw. Further, the city of Warsaw benefits from a new perspective to the long-term success of the community.

First-year objectives for the council include laying the foundation for which the council will operate, including a constitution and bylaws, as well as creating a shared learning environment engaging members with community leaders. The commitment for students is year-long and corresponds with the school year calendar.

The council will be comprised of the mayor, an MYAC coordinator, council members who assist in selection and advisement and 20 young adults. Four students serving on the committee will be selected to hold the positions of president, vice-president, secretary/treasurer and social media coordinator. The council will meet once a month corollary to the school year though some efforts may require other meetings or work outside normally scheduled meetings depending on projects or activities.

Members of the MYAC are eligible to receive letters of recommendation from the mayor pending successful completion of the MYAC program.

To apply for the MYAC, students are asked to fill out and mail or email an application and permission form. The application will include a short essay on what applicants believe the biggest issues regarding young adults in the community and what might resolve these problems.

Applications must be postmarked by Sept. 5. Following the receipt of applications, candidates will be reviewed for the best fit for the objectives of the council. This may include phone or face-to-face interviews. A final team of candidates will be selected of up to 20 members and notified by mail.
