Classes and Events At The Y This Fall

WARSAW — Kosciusko Community YMCA will be starting fall classes on Sept. 5. Classes will run through Oct. 29. Classes for youth will include swim lessons and gymnastics classes for all ages. Classes for adults this fall include group exercise and Indoor Group Cycling classes, classes for older adults and water aerobics in both the warm water and lap pools.  Adult group exercise and water aerobics classes are included with a Y membership. The Y will have interval training, cycling, zumba®, body sculpt, boot camp, fit after 40, mat fusion, yoga, TRX® and more. For a complete listing of times and descriptions see www.kcymca.org.

A1c is a blood test that measures the average amount of sugar or glucose in your blood, letting you know how well your blood sugar is being controlled over time.  This level is used to determine whether or not you could be pre-diabetic or diabetic.  A1c screenings will be offered by the Y on Aug. 28, Sept. 26 and Oct. 10, in the YMCA Fitness Testing Room.  In addition, Parkview Health will be offering free A1c tests on Sept. 12, at their Check-up Days in the Parkview Center for Healthy Living in the YMCA’s lobby. A new sport will be starting at the Y this fall- Badminton.  Join open-play-style doubles badminton for up to two hours in the gym from 8 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday nights.

Pickleball will be starting up again on Sept. 8.  There will be open play on from 1 to 3 p.m. Fridays. Y members can play for free.  Those who aren’t members would pay a small fee. Pickleball will be free for everyone on September 15 so you can try out the game.  For more information contact Zane Gard at (574) 269-9622 x238.

To support those in our community going through cancer and their caregivers, the Y is hosting “Kathy’s Cancer Conversations,” a volunteer-led cancer support group meeting from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the 2nd Monday of each month in the Parkview Center for Healthy Living inside the YMCA.  Sept. 11 the group will look at “What do you Say?” How do you tell people you have cancer? How much do you say?  On the other hand, what do you say to someone who has cancer?

English as a Second Language will be offered at the Y for those 18 and up in partnership with Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. on Tuesdays starting Sept. 12.  There are 5 different levels based on ability.  The class is free with an initial fee for the book.  No need to register ahead of time, just show up to join the class.  For more information contact Zane Gard at (574) 269-9622 x238.

The Adult Beginner Spanish course starting on Sept. 12 will be a basic course offering introductory Spanish for adults.  Participants will learn to listen, speak, read and write while enjoying the rewards of lifelong learning and gaining the skills to connect to the Spanish speaking members of the community.  The class meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Sept. 12-Oct. 31, in the Parkview Center for Healthy Living inside the YMCA. The YMCA’s 8 Weeks to Fitness will be starting on Oct. 9.  Diet and exercise are extremely important to leading a healthy lifestyle. This program is designed to combine regular physical activity with weekly tips for proper nutrition to help maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of diseases and promote overall health. Personal trainers and group exercise instructors will teach and promote proper ways to reach weight loss and fitness goals through exercise and being mindful of your eating habits. Classes will be held four times a week at the YMCA to offer a wide variety of meeting times for participants.  Registrants will receive a calendar of times and rooms for classes.  For more information contact Stacy Thomas at (574) 269-9622 x216.

The YMCA’s Coed Adult Volleyball Leagues will be offered twice a week from 7 to 10 p.m. on Monday or Thursday starting Oct. 19.
