Warsaw SportsBoys Tennis

The Warsaw boys tennis home opener was spoiled by a very strong Penn team.

The Kingsmen, who return five lettermen from last season’s 18-8 team,  rolled to straight set wins on all five varsity courts to hand the Tigers the loss.

Aidan Sucharetza led the way for Penn with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Caleb Williams on the No. 3 singles court.

AJ Antonelli topped Colton Lind 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Will Thurin completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bailey Buhrt at No. 2 singles action.

The Kingsmen got a 6-4, 6-2 win from Eric Spaargaren and Aiden O’Day at No. 1 doubles over the Warsaw team of Spencer Britton and Nolan Knight.

Penn completed the shutout as its No. 2 doubles team of Nick Cosetti and Maity Spitters beat Kyler Bartol and Reuben Williams 6-2, 6-3.

Penn won the junior varsity action by a 7-5 final.  Jarett Orr won in singles play for the Tigers. Also winning for Warsw were its doubles team of Jake Kaufman and Michael Ray, Brian Elliott and Hayden Anderson, Graham Landwerlin and Canton Waddle and Carter Schuh and Riley Dugger.

Warsaw, now 1-1, will play at Mishawaka Marian on Monday.

 

Girls Golf

Another consistent team effort earned the Warsaw girls golf team two more wins.

Madelyn Ray earned medalist honors on the day with a 47 to lead the Tigers past Tippecanoe Valley and Wabash in a triangular at the Stonehenge Golf Club.

Warsaw shot a 192, while Wabash came in at 225 and Valley at 252.

Izzy Ray and Delaney Wihebrink each had a 48 for the Tigers, who improve to 7-2 on the season. Grayson Kilburn shot a 49 and Brooklyn Fitzgerald had a 54 for the hosts.

Makayla Sandbakken led the way for Valley with a 54. Bethany Johnson shot a 62 for the Vikings, while Jordan Krotke had a 66 and Kelsey Shafer a 70.

Halie Miller led Wabash with a 53.

The Warsaw junior varsity team shot a 222. Valley and Wabash did not field JV teams. Anna Morgan led the JV Tigers with a 54. Julia Hildebrand had a 55, while Miriam Hagg shot 56, Cassidy Good 57 and Valerie Messmore 58 for the Tigers.

Warsaw will host its own invitational Saturday back at Stonehenge.

 

Volleyball

The Warsaw volleyball team made it two-for-two on the young season with a home win over Huntington North.

The Tigers defeated the Vikings 23-25, 25-17, 25-11, 26-24.

Lexie Day had another big hitting performance to pace Warsaw. Day delivered 13 kills and also picked up a pair of solo blocks in the non-conference win.

Kacy Bragg had nine kills and six aces for the Tigers. Erin Peugh piled up 22 digs and added four aces.

Hanna Leach was also strong offensively as she produced 11 kills for Warsaw.

Warsaw will play in the Kokomo Invitational Saturday. The Tigers will then host Homestead Monday evening.
