NORTH WEBSTER — While texting and Facebook messaging are convenient forms of communications, receiving a beautiful handmade greeting card touches the heart in a special way. Learn how to make your own personal greeting cards at the Craft-A-Card Workshop 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at North Webster Community Public Library.  Instructor Wrenay Kann has taught mixed media art classes for over 20 years and will provide easy step-by-step instructions. The cost of the workshop is $10 and includes supplies for making three beautifully detailed cards.  Advance registration and pre-payment are required to attend and are currently being accepted at the library’s Circulation Desk.

Making things from scratch has been part of the Amish way of life for generations. Join the library on a field trip to Shipshewana in LaGrange County on Tuesday, Aug. 8, to learn more about the history and culture of the Amish. The field trip leaves the library at 9 a.m. and will travel by carpool. The first stop will be the Menno-Hof Amish/Mennonite Information Center that tells the Amish-Mennonite story from 16 century Europe to the New World and modern day Indiana. The next stop will be Rubley’s Historic Blacksmith Shop where James Rubley will demonstrate this traditional artisan trade while giving an overview of blacksmithing in America. From there the group will travel to Topeka for lunch at Tiffany’s Restaurant and some traditional Amish fare. To join the field trip, advance registration is required. Bring along $7 for admission fee to the Menno-Hof Information Center, plus money for gift shop and lunch. Stop by the library’s circulation desk or call (574) 834-7122 to sign up.

Openings are still available for coffee and canvas 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, when Karla Hayden provides instruction and supplies for painting a country floral still life. Cost is $18 with advance registration and pre-payment needed by Aug. 10. Registration and payment are being accepted by the circulation desk.

Up to 10 titles can be borrowed at a time, and there are no late fees, because items are returned automatically unless renewed. E-books can be accessed from the library’s website and clicking on the e-Indiana Digital Consortium icon. Patrons can also stop by the Circulation Desk for help with downloading.
