GREENCASTLE — A woman was arrested at the Putnamville Correctional Facility for trying to smuggle in contraband.
Jail authorities say they stopped 33-year-old Sarah Maxie of Greenwood on her way to visit inmate Justin Legan based on information they’d gotten from inside the jail. While questioning Maxie, she reportedly surrendered 6.6 grams of tobacco and 5.9 grams of heroin.
She was arrested without incident and taken to the Putnam County Jail on preliminary charges of conspiracy/attempted dealing in a narcotic drug, as well as neglect of a dependent because her young daughter was with her at the time. She is being held in lieu of a $30,000 cash bond.
“This case unfortunately involved an innocent child, and our staff handled it professionally, without incident, and her exposure was as minimal as possible,” Warden Brian Smith said in a statement. “I commend all the staff that were involved. They did a great job of working together and staying on task.”
Maxie’s daughter was taken to the Indiana Department of Child Services.
Legan, the inmate Maxie was at the jail to visit, is currently serving several consecutive sentences out of Marion and Johnson counties for robbery and burglary. His earliest possible release date is October 7, 2022.
