SOUTH BEND — A member of one of the first teams in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was honored at Four Winds Field on Thursday.
Betsy Jochum started playing for the South Bend Blue Sox back in 1943.
She was paid $50 a week to start out, later making $100 a week.
“Sockum” Jochum says it was a great gig at the time.
“It was an opportunity to earn some money playing the game,” said Betsy. “It was very nice to get paid to play a game, especially for a woman at that time. Women didn’t play usually, get paid to play then, back then.”
The 96-year-old was welcomed to Four Winds Field and honored before the game.
