WARSAW — A Warsaw man who impregnated a 14-year-old was sentenced today, July 6, in Kosciusko Superior Court 1.
Christopher Raymond Sheets, 22, 209 N. Maple Ave., Warsaw, was sentenced on a charge of sexual misconduct with a child between the ages of 14 and 16 years old, a level 4 felony.
On Feb. 28, an officer with the Warsaw Police Department received a call about sexual misconduct with a minor occurring between a female victim and Sheets. The officer met with the victim on March 1 to discuss the allegations.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, the victim told the officer the two had sexual intercourse at Lucerne Park in Warsaw. She advised that in October 2016 the two had been having sexual intercourse every other day. The intercourse would sometimes occur at the victim’s residence. She further advised that they most recently had sexual intercouse on Feb. 26 or 27. Sheets confirmed this story.
The victim’s mother was present to make a victim’s statement before the court, stating that her daughter had to live every day with being pregnant. The mother accused Sheets of taking advantage of her daughter while her daughter was grieving the loss of a family member. Ultimately the mother asked the court to not allow Sheets any contact with the victim.
Deputy Prosecutor Katy Hampton set the scene of what happened, informing the court that Sheets was friends with the victim’s older brother. The victim had told Sheets she had a crush on him and rather than setting boundaries, Sheets fostered a relationship with the victim.
Sheets’ attorney Jay Rigdon stated that Sheets was not predatory, but made an “immature” decision to react to his feelings that had developed for the victim.
Judge Cates sentenced Sheets to six years at the Indiana Department of Corrections, with two years suspended to be served on probation. Sheets will register as a sex offender and be allowed no contact with the victim.
