Baseball
Triton won the battle of ranked teams Tuesday night, beating Whitko 12-5 in South Whitley.
Triton, ranked No. 10 in Class 1-A, broke a five-all tie in the sixth inning with six runs to stun the Class 2-A No. 7 Wildcats. The Trojans did the damage against Whitko ace Drew Bradford. Dylan Hensley got the scoreboard moving with an RBI single, then a wild pitch brought in Max Slusser. Zac Pitney added a two-run single which gave Triton a four-run lead. An error and Lucas Newman sacrifice fly ended the rally.
Triton added a run in the seventh to close out the road victory.
Slusser had a unique box score, getting just one official at-bat, but walked three times and was hit by a pitch and scored on all four occasions. Hensley, Pitney and Nate Flenar all had a pair of RBIs in the game and Flenar scored three runs aided by a pair of walks and a double.
Triton had just four hits in the game, but drew eight walks and benefitted from a whopping seven Wildcat errors.
Bradford and Alex Bechtold each had two hits, Bradford driving in two and Bechtold scoring three times. Alex Robbins added a solo homer for the Wildcats.
Triton moves to 11-4 on the season while Whitko settles at 17-5. The Trojans host Winamac Thursday, the Wildcats travel to Rochester.
Softball
The Lady Trojans picked up a good conference win Tuesday, besting North Judson 5-4.
A three-run first inning set the tone for Triton, which needed single runs in the third and fourth to hold off North Judson, which scored single runs in the second through fifth innings. North Judson put two runners on base in the seventh, advancing them to second and third, but Triton pitcher Hannah Woodard induced a fly ball to get out of the jam and the win.
Taytum Hargrave led off Triton’s half of the first with a double, then came around to score on a Whytnie Miller bunt. Nicole Sechrist then hit her fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot, to give Triton the early lead.
Hargrave went 3-for-4 and Courtney Jennings added an RBI double in the winning effort.
Woodard got the win in relief, allowing just one run in three innings. Jennings started the contest, lasting four innings.
Triton moves to 11-7 overall and visit Caston Thursday.
