AKRON – She may have a bruise, but she will have some pride going to bed Monday night. Taylor Czichilski was hit with a pitch in the bottom of the eighth that drove in the winning run as Tippecanoe Valley took a 12-11 decision over Southwood in Three Rivers Conference softball.

With a swift wind blowing straight out of the yard at Valley, it was a hitter’s paradise as both teams combined for 22 hits, plus 21 combined walks and nine errors, making for a merry-go-round on the bases.

Southwood held a 10-7 lead in the sixth, but an error cut the lead to 10-8, then a Taylor Rogers double plated the tying runs in the seventh. Kassity Simpson’s walk in the top of the eighth gave the Knights an 11-10 lead, only for Kayla Scott to tie it with a single, leading to Czichikski’s walk-off hit-by-pitch.

Simpson and Valley’s Ally Betten both went yard in the game. Simpson had three hits, three RBIs and reached base five times for the Knights. MaKenna Pace added three hits and three runs scored and Brooke Elliott had two hits and four RBIs in the visitor’s cause.

Valley’s statistical numbers were also staggering. Abby Betten walked four times, yet scored just one run. Scott and Mia Gunnels combined for five hits and five walks, four RBIs and three runs scored. Katie Prater and Sydney Howard had two hits apiece and Czichilski scored two runs.

Valley moves to 6-10 on the season and 2-2 in the TRC. Southwood drops to 5-8 and 0-4.

Valley will host Northfield Wednesday.
