ELKHART — A man living near Elkhart is irritated because he says thieves ripped off his motorcycle last week.

Jerry Boomershine says the thieves got into his garage and rolled the bike away, pulling it with a car down a busy county road.

“When I’m at home, getting ready for a ride or something, that’s where I park it,” Boomershine said.

But the space in his Elkhart County driveway has been empty for four days.

“And my daughter said, “the bike is gone, Dad,” Boomershine said after his daughter called when driving by his house.

Boomershine says while he was at work Thursday, someone opened his garage door along County Road 9 and made off with his Harley Davidson.

“We have a lot of break-ins, last year, they hit me and my neighbor both,” Boomershine said.

After chatting with neighbors, Boomershine says this was no quick getaway.

“And they saw a red car and a guy behind it, pushing a motorcycle,” Boomershine said.

Boomershine is now hoping county sheriff’s detectives can use those witnesses and nearby surveillance video to finger the crooks.

“If there is video, it’ll be beneficial because it’s daylight,” Capt. Jeff Siegel said.

Boomershine says he’s suspicious, but hopeful about his chances of getting his bike back.

“I don’t see anybody out, taking it for a ride, changing the ignition, I think they were probably going to part it out,” Boomershine said.

“With motorcycles, you could wheel it into a small trailer or truck and virtually disappear a lot easier than say, a Camaro or something,” Capt. Siegel said.

So far, pictures of the bike have already been shared a number of times on Facebook and Boomershine says his friends are keeping an eye out.

Police say after any theft, knowing your VIN number is helpful. You can also buy a vehicle GPS tracker, which range in price anywhere from $20 to around $100. Lo-Jack is another service active in 29 states which typically costs a few hundred dollars.
