Wawasee Sports

Softball

The offensive machine cranking in the Wawasee softball program kept churning out runs, 13 to be exact, Tuesday night in a 13-8 win over Columbia City at Morsches Park.

Wawasee exploded out to an 8-1 lead after its half of the third, but needed to tack on some insurance to hold off the Eagles. After City scored four runs in the third, Wawasee scored a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth to pull away.

Meghan Fretz and Hannah Haines each went deep for the Lady Warriors, both two-run shots. Fretz finished with four RBI and Haines three driven in. Faith Swihart had three hits and two runs scored for Wawasee, which had 12 hits on the night.

Columbia City was led by Morgan Bailes, who was 5-for-5 with two runs scored and Bella Ross hit two homers and drove in three.

Fretz got the win in relief, working five innings and giving up 10 hits, but struck out six and allowed just three runs. Amber Lemberg worked the first two innings, giving up five runs.

Wawasee moves to 5-0 with its next matchup Friday at Manchester.

Girls Track

Wawasee had a tough time on the track at Concord Tuesday, losing 99.5-32.5.

Wawasee did have four winners, but only six athletes placed in the top two of any event on the night.

The field was where Wawasee made its hay, led by Jada Parzygnot with a 9-0 pole vault, Hannah-Marie Lamle’s 16-5.5 in the long jump and Alexis Mangas’ 100-0 toss in discus. Sara Pritchard was second in both discus (93-4) and shot put (29-11.5).

Elizabeth Zorn in the mile at 5:34.84 was the lone Wawasee runner with a top-two time.

Wawasee sits at 0-1 in the NLC, its next meet next Tuesday at Plymouth with Goshen.

Girls Tennis

A doubles win was all Wawasee had to show for its 4-1 loss at Westview Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 2 doubles team of Courtney Larson and Taylor Mock won in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 over Alisha Hochstetler and Chloe Lovell.

Westview swept through the singles play, with Lauryn Riegsecker holding off Meg Heinisch 1-6, 6-0, 5-2, Karyssa Davis over Peyton Rookstool 6-0, 6-3, and Reghan Heffner beating Elizabeth Kleopfer 6-1, 6-2.

At one doubles, Serenity Corlett and Madison Kresse held on for a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7) against Kabrea Rostochak and Kendra Doerr.

Westview won six of the seven JV courts, the lone Wawasee breakthrough coming from Brittney Jackson and Molly Jones winning 9-7 over Maddie Sherman and Alexis Roth in doubles play.

Wawasee (1-1) will visit Goshen on Thursday.
