Girls Tennis

It was quite an opening night for the Triton tennis team.

Quinn Downing needed three sets, but got the win as Triton eeked out a 3-2 team win over Hoosier North Athletic Conference foe Knox Monday night in the season opener for the Lady Trojans.

Downing, playing two singles for the first time in her career, lost the first set to Shelby Faverty 6-3, but rallied to get back the second 6-2. As all of the remaining courts hadn’t settled much with the two teams sitting at 2-2, Downing dug in and snatched the third set 6-4 to allow Triton to escape.

Also winning for the Lady Trojans were Kolbie Mason at No. 1 in a 6-2, 6-4 result over Hannah Lueth and the No. 1 double tandem of Emma Ross and Hannah Wanemacher, beating Noira Hasneri and Sommer Shepard one and one.

Knox earned a win at No. 2 doubles when Kayla Loughry and Madison Land took care of Kendra Morris and Kaylene Slabaugh three and one. Cameron McGowan defeated Siera Sauer 6-4, 7-6 (3) at No. 3 singles to knot the match at two apiece, setting up the Downing result.

Triton won three of the four JV matches on the night.

Triton will work again Wednesday on its home court when Tippecanoe Valley comes calling.

Baseball

Zac Pitney had the play of the day, tripling home three runs in the sixth to lift Triton to an 8-2 win at LaVille Monday night.

Pitney came up with two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth and drove a pitch into the gap, turning a one-run game into a four-run split, then later scored on a LaVille error.

Pitney also doubled and walked in the contest while Connor Pitney scored twice. Max Slusser doubled and scored a run for the Trojans, now 2-0 (1-0 HNAC) on the season.

Dylan Hensley threw six strong innings, giving up just two hits, three walks and struck out seven. Neither of the two LaVille runs were earned. Adam Steinke was on the hook for the loss, giving up four runs in 5.1 innings, striking out seven.

Triton and LaVille will meet again Tuesday in Bourbon.
