WARSAW — One chess team from Lincoln Elementary School placed second in its division at the Scholastic Chess Indiana Team State Finals on Saturday, March 25.

Three chess teams from LES went to the finals held in Hammond last weekend. One third grade and under team placed second, another third grade and under team placed ninth and sixth grade and under team placed 14th in the official standings.

In total, 55 teams competed in the third grade and under category and 44 teams competed in the sixth grade and under category.

Since October, a number of kids at LES have been staying after school on Wednesdays to practice their chess playing skills.

Four teams from LES, each comprised of four students, headed to Goshen in February to compete in regionals. Three of those teams qualified for last weekend’s state championship.
