Strawberry Slated To Speak In Elkhart
ELKHART – Former MLB star Darryl Strawberry will speak at the Lerner Theatre on May 19 as part of Oaklawn’s 18th Annual Spring Spectacular.
Strawberry was an eight-time All-Star and won four World Series titles in his 17-year pro playing career. He was the National League Rookie of the Year for the Mets in 1983. Strawberry won a World Series title with the Mets in 1986 and added three more with the Yankees in 1996, 1998 and 1999.
Strawberry was also suspended three times by MLB for substance abuse. He is also a two-time cancer survivor and is now an ordained minister. The 55-year old Strawberry and his wife Tracy founded Strawberry Ministries and operate two Christian treatment centers in Florida and the Darryl Strawberry Foundation, which supports people with autism.
Strawberry hit 335 home runs in his playing career and drove in 1,000 runs.
