PORT TOWNSEND, WASH. — Authorities have destroyed a World War II-era grenade that was found on a beach at a state park in Washington state.

Police in the city of Port Townsend say someone found the grenade while walking on the beach last Sunday.

The man said he didn’t want to leave the grenade on the beach, so he took it home and called 911 to report his finding.

The bomb squad took the grenade and destroyed it.

Fort Worden State Park was used as a military base during both world wars. Police say other military items, like shells, have been found on the beaches in the past.

Police want to remind everyone never to touch or attempt to pick up any military items that could possibly be live.
