Marandet Helps Cougars To Tourney Win
UPLAND – The third time was the charm for the Spring Arbor men’s basketball team Wednesday night.
The Cougars avenged a pair of regular-season losses to Taylor in dramatic fashion in a quarterfinal game of the Crossroads League Tournament.
Junior Zach Medendorp dropped in a jumper with just 1.9 seconds to play to lift Spring Arbor to a 75-73 win at Taylor.
The Cougars, who improve to 18-13, advance to play No. 3 ranked and top seed Bethel on Saturday at 3 p.m. The semifinal game will be played in the Wiekamp Center at Bethel in Mishawaka. The Pilots, who beat Grace 102-92 Wednesday night, defeated Spring Arbor 80-66 and 76-74 during the regular season.
Taylor led 39-33 at halftime before the Cougars rallied in the final half. The close game saw 16 ties and 20 lead changes.
Medendorp led his team with 27 points on 12-19 shooting from the field.
Spring Arbor freshman Paul Marandet had 11 points in the win. The former star point guard at WCHS also had five rebounds and six assists for the Cougars.
Spring Arbor shot 30-60 from the field, while holding Taylor to 23-59. The Cougars also had a 39-30 rebounding edge in the contest.
Taylor drops to 20-11.
