MILFORD — More details have been released from an accident that caused the Milford Fire Department to lose one of its tankers on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

At approximately 12:38 p.m. Milford Firefighter Troy Haines, 49, was driving the department’s 3,000 gallon tanker southbound on Main Street in Milford with the vehicle’s lights and sirens activated. According to the accident report, a dog started to run across the road in front of the vehicle and Haines swerved the vehicle slightly to avoid it.

The right tires of the tanker then dipped off the west side of the roadway. There was a very steep incline and Haines was fighting to keep the vehicle from tipping over while remaining partially on the roadway. The tanker traveled like this for approximately 75 yards.

The vehicle finally then returned fully onto the roadway, but at this point the tanker slid sideways and rolled over. The water tank of the vehicle detached from the main body of the truck and the truck came to rest on its wheels.

Haines suffered scrapes and lacerations to his face and head from flying glass. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital for further treatment.

The official accident report stated the damage was estimated at up to $50,000.
