WARSAW – In what could be seen as a preview between two teams expected to challenge for plenty of lane wins in the upcoming boys and girls swim sectionals at Warsaw, the Tigers had no problems in manhandling Columbia City in both duals.
The Tuesday matchup saw Warsaw swim slightly sluggish per coach Tony DeBrota, but still got the job done with a 130-41 boys score and 124-56 girls score.
“The team looked pretty tired for most of the meet, but the got the job done and swam smart,” DeBrota said. “Nothing really looked sloppy, but a little out of it. However, that’s how it should look right now. Personal records are great, but not necessarily a part of the plan right now. But working hard and staying focused while sprinting is the goal.”
Part of the PR train for Warsaw included three wins, from Emma Pena in diving with 138.15 points, Taylor Gunter in the butterfly (1:06.06) and Grant Knight in the individual medley (2:08.88).
The boys had Hudson Snyder take two wins in the 200 free (1:56.35) and the 500 (5:10.02), the latter one event DeBrota noted was a spotlight of the meet. Knight added a win in the breaststroke (1:01.63), Delaney Wihebrink also had two wins, taking the IM (2:20.49) and backstroke (1:04.08) as did Brenna Morgan in the 50 (25.77) and 100 (57.47) freestyles.
Alex Cook of Warsaw and Matt Webber of Columbia City had a pair of great races against one another, with Cook winning the 50 free at 23.55 to Webber’s 23.56, and Webber returning the favor in the 100 at 51.33 to Cook’s 52.48.
Collecting other wins for Warsaw included Evan Borchers in the butterfly (56.13), Nick Zogbi in the backstroke (59.52), Laurel Moeller in the 200 free (2:11.15), Lauren Kuhl in the 500 free (5:56.42) and Cameron Bowell in diving at 126.75.
Warsaw claimed all six relay wins, the boys in the medley (1:45.59), the 200 (1:38.63) and the 400 (3:33.91) and the girls in the medley (1:59.46), the 200 (1:52.81) and the 400 (4:06.32).
City’s Mykaela Crowell won the breaststroke at 1:16.78.
Warsaw will compete again at home on Jan. 4 in hosting Tippecanoe Valley, Rochester and Huntington North.
