Richard E. Pentelow, 85, Plymouth, passed away at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016 in Elkhart.
The son of Clyde and Ilo (Mead) Pentelow, Richard was born Nov. 27, 1931 in Plymouth. He graduated from Lincoln High School. On May 11, 1984 he was joined in marriage to Patricia Ann Houin Read of Plymouth. He served four years in the United States Air Force, where he was a mechanic who worked on jet engines and received both the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After being honorably discharged he worked at NIPSCO for over forty years.
A beloved husband and step-father, Richard was a car enthusiast who enjoyed racing in his youth and followed NASCAR throughout his life. He loved to travel and was able to visit many exotic places. Due to his great love for this community, he amassed a large collection of Plymouth memorabilia. He was a Freemason, a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He attended the First United Church of Christ for many years.
Richard is survived by his step-children; Paula A. (Read) Hoy and her husband, Robert, Temperance, Mich.; Beth M. (Read) Cashen and her husband, Daniel, Plymouth; and step-daughter, Karen L. (Read) Gangloff, Inwood; with twelve step-grandchildren and twenty-one step-great-grandchildren completing the family. Also surviving are Richard’s brother Leon (Mary Alice) Pentelow, Plymouth; two nieces and two nephews.
Richard is preceded in passing by his wife, Patricia, his parents and his brother Clyde.
A funeral service in honor of Richard with be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 17 at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison Street Plymouth, IN 46563 and will be officiated by Pastor Jon Hueni of Grace Fellowship Baptist Church. Richard will be interred at Oak Hill Cemetery.
A time of visiting with the Pentelow family will be held from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Dec. 17 the funeral home.
The Pentelow family request memorial contributions in honor of Richard are made to the donor’s choice.
