
WARSAW — Former Brooklyn Dodgers baseball player Carl Erskine will be the keynote speaker for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration on Jan. 16, at the Manahan Orthopedic Capital Center, 610 Wooster Road, Winona Lake.
Erskine will speak about his time playing baseball on the Brooklyn Dodger’s team with Jackie Robinson during a time of high racial tensions. Erskine’s speech will focus on hostilities towards minorities in sports.
The free event will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Committee to Commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. will provide 500 box lunches for attendants.
During the event, two $500 scholarships will be given to students. Those interested in receiving the scholarship can and turn in their applications to the Lake City Bank branch at 1221 West Lake Street.
