WINONA LAKE — Jolly Old Saint Nicholas visited the Village of Winona for the annual tree lighting, during the event that took place from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, officially kicking off the holiday season.

Train rides, live music by John Durnell and a Stinson Organ courtesy of Karl Rider provided a fun filled afternoon for Village shoppers and those coming to donate to Toys for Tots. Many of the children were fascinated with the Stinson Organ, stepping close to listen to the music.

Santa Claus arrived to the Village around 4:30 p.m. to listen to children’s Christmas wishes. Holiday cookies and hot chocolate were available as families waited to talk to Santa Claus and to ride the train around the Village.

Winona Lake Fire Department was present to assist in the lighting of the tree. The ladder from the truck was extended to the top of the tree, and was climbed by Officer Dave Morales with Esteban Lozano and Anthony Cole.

Cole had some reservations once reaching the end of the ladder, admitting that the heights became a little scary, but both boys stayed brave and helped light the tree to start the season.

Santa Claus waited nearby, in anticipation for the lights, clapping excitedly once the tree was aglow.

Many shops in the Village stayed open late in conjunction with the event, closing at 8 p.m.
