WARSAW — Northern Indiana is in for a treat. The Lakeland Art Association just completed their juried art competition for their annual Fall Show. Winners were announced at a reception on Sunday, Nov. 13 at the new gallery location on Winona Avenue in Warsaw.

You are welcome to bring your family and enjoy the exhibit for free Wednesday through Saturday for the rest of this month from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. I encourage you to visit and see the talented entries. Teachers, you are welcome to call the gallery and schedule a time for you and your students to walk through with a docent who will help explain the art and talk about the various art mediums that are on view.

There were many exceptional works entered in this competition and one only has to visit the gallery to view them.  The judge had to have experienced a very difficult and frustrating time in evaluating and then deciding on those top works to be given awards. Following are the works that were selected:

  • First Place went to Mike Kimble for his photography work. Please visit the gallery to view this very lovely piece of work.
  • Second Place went to Steve Creighton for a gorgeous oil landscape.
  • Third Place went to Brenda Stichter for her atmospheric and imaginative piece.
  • Honorable mentions went to Susan Ring, Tammy Kratzer, and Sherri Johnson.

For your information juried art shows are considered the crème de la crème of competitions. Why? In general, not all paintings and works are allowed in the show. The judge usually selects works deemed unworthy to be at a high level of craftsmanship and workmanship to be eliminated from even being in the competition. It is considered a feather in an artist’s beret –well that is a cap isn’t it?  Anyway that feather is treasured and entry into a juried show is esteemed and coveted. I think you will be pleasantly pleased at many of the works on view in this show.  I truly expect to hear many of you say, “Wow, why didn’t that win something?”  Many of these works were well deserving of an award and many may well go on to win awards in other shows elsewhere.  For judges do have different tastes, and although all try to be unbiased, our personal preferences do come to the fore more often than we would like.

Visit this exhibit and see for yourself.
