SYRACUSE — The Wawasee girls swim team returned to the pool Saturday afternoon to dive in head first for the start of the 2016-17 season. The Warriors rolled over a struggling DeKalb squad 140-30.
DeKalb, which only had six girls present at the meet, was just not capable of competing with a Wawasee squad that returned several girls from a strong team last season. The Warriors swept the top spot in every event and took second in all but two swimming events.
The day started out with Wawasee taking the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. The team of Alyssa Koch, Shelby Adams, Ella Park and Kaia Manning had the top time of 2:07.29. Taking second was Wawasee’s team made up of Ebba Bjurman, Caitlin Kingrey, Lizzy Brugh and Tessa Freel at 2:19.19.
Paige Miller then won the 200 free with a final time of 2:05.16 for Wawasee. Miller, who will sign with Purdue this Tuesday, later won her signature event with a time of 5:19.71 in the 500 free.
Adams was a double winner as well for the Warriors. She took first in the 200 IM (2:24.61) as well as the 100 breast (1:15.82). Joining Miler and Adams with two wins on the day were Koch and Manning. Koch won her first event, the 100 fly, with a time of 1:10.08 then later came back to win the 100 back with a 1:07.44. Manning, meanwhile, started her prep career with wins in the 50 free (27.40) and 100 free (1:01.63).
For Wawasee head coach Julie Robinson, Saturday’s meet was not so much about winning as it was about see where times are in a competitive setting as well as seeing which girls stand out early.
“I really think Ebba (Bjurman) did an amazing job today,” remarked Robinson. “She’s only been swimming with us for a couple of weeks and she’s really stepped up. I think we’ll see a lot out of her towards the end of the season.
“I know Abby Hackleman went out and had a lifetime best in her 200 free by 11 seconds already. Logan Harter, she’s a brand new swimmer, went out and a great race today. It’s just fun to see the young kids, or the new kids, go out and see what they can do. They all did an amazing job today.”
Bjurman took second in the 100 fly (1:04.69) and in the 100 back (1:12.04) in addition to her contributions on the winning 200 medley relay and first place 400 free relay team (4:13.80). Koch, Park and Miller joined Bjurman on the 400.
Wawasee also won the 200 free relay (1:52.68) behind efforts from Adams, Caitling Kingrey, Manning and Miller. Kingrey also enjoyed a second place finish in the 100 breast (1:29.28).
Riley Kunkle posted a 140.35 to take first in the diving portion of Saturday’s meet.
DeKalb was led by Sarah Williams who placed second in both the 200 free (2:23.59) and then 100 fly (1:12.70).
Wawasee (1-0) will swim again on Nov. 22 at East Noble.
