INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Supreme Court annual report (July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016) and the Indiana Judicial Service Report and Probation Report (Jan. 1, 2015 – Dec. 31, 2015) are available online.

Indiana Supreme Court Annual Report

The 60-page Supreme Court annual report provides information about the work of the court and its affiliated agencies. In addition to providing statistics on the nearly 1,000 cases considered by the court, the report also details the administrative work of the judicial branch. The five justices heard oral arguments in 65 cases and handed down 85 majority opinions after reading thousands of pages of briefs. In 2015-2016, 83 percent of court opinions were unanimous.

A variety of Supreme Court agency initiatives are detailed in the report. It also includes photographs of judicial branch leaders interacting with students, community members, judges, and the press.

By the end of the fiscal year:

  • 250 courts in 56 counties maintained records in the Odyssey case management system
  • 143 hours of instruction were provided to judges statewide
  • 505 applicants passed the Indiana bar exam
  • 1,031 registered mediators were in the statewide registry
  • 99 final orders were issued in attorney discipline cases
  • 24 judges faced disciplinary action from the Judicial Qualifications Commission
  • 383 tweets highlighted opinions and other court announcements

Indiana Judicial Service Report

Over 1.3 million new cases were filed in Indiana trial courts in 2015. Details on court operations at the county and appellate level for 2015 are available in the Indiana Judicial Service Report and the Indiana Probation Report which can be found online at courts.in.gov/admin/3520.htm.

Details regarding Kosciusko County can be found in both Volume 1 and Volume 2. Details relating to weighted caseloads and fiscal report can be found starting on page 118. Details of the county ‘s caseload statistics: cases pending, new filing, disposed, transferred in and out, venued in and out can be found in volume 2 of the report starting on page 18. Volume 3 provides financial information — expenditures, revenues and court personnel, starting on page 31. A probation summary and statistics report is also available in a separate volume. Individual county statistics begin on page 33.

The following is just some of the information available for the state (calendar year 2015):

  • 1,054,153 new cases were filed in Indiana trial courts – courts of record – 307,634 – filed in city/town/small claims courts
  • 1,160 civil and criminal jury trials were held statewide
  • 218,845 cases included an individual who went to court without a lawyer
  • 232 murder cases were filed in trial courts
  • 19,023 mortgage foreclosures were filed in the state
  • 17,491 child In need of services cases were filed
  • An interpreter was used in 13,747 trial court cases
  • 3,732 cases were referred to alternative dispute resolution
  • 116,045 adults were under supervision by court probation departments (as of December 31, 2015)
  • Cities, towns, townships, counties, and the state spent $473 million to operate the courts
  • Filing fees, court costs, user fees, and fines generated $175 million in revenue

The Indiana Judicial Service Report and Indiana Probation Report are produced annually by the Indiana Office of Court Services as required by Indiana statute (IC-33-24-6-3) and Supreme Court administrative rules.
