Whitko Among Regional Casualties

Tuesday was the end of the line for Whitko and several area volleyball teams as IHSAA regional matchups took place around the state.

Whitko was swept by host South Adams in the Class 2-A matchup by a score of 25-10, 25-21, 25-17. The Wildcats, winners of the Central Noble Sectional – its first-ever sectional title – concluded its banner season 25-11 overall.

Leading Whitko in the regional were Kaity Reed with 13 kills, 10 digs and three blocks, Lyndsey Sapp with five kills and three blocks, Haley Yohe with 25 assists and eight digs, and two aces apiece from Andrea Snavely and Haley Howard.

South Adams (26-8) will meet No. 7 Rochester (31-5), a 3-0 winner over No. 13 Covington, in the Bremen Semi-state this Saturday. The other half of the Bremen bracket will have No. 1 Wapahani and No. 8 Hammond Bishop Noll.

In the Class 1-A tourney, No. 7 Fort Wayne Blackhawk and No. 9 Daleville will be among the four teams playing in the Caston Semi-state after 3-0 wins over Triton and Seton Catholic, respectively. Triton finishes its season 22-12 overall after its 25-17, 25-6, 25-12 loss. The Trojans, in its third straight regional, have lost all three to Blackhawk. On the other half of the Caston group will be No. 2 Lafayette Central Catholic and No. 3 Pioneer, both 3-0 winners over Riverton Parke and Morgan Township.

West Noble’s (31-6) run came to an end in the Class 3-A bracket, losing 3-0 at No. 10 Fort Wayne Dwenger. The Saints (29-7) will meet No. 1 Yorktown, a 3-0 winner over Bellmont. The Twin Lakes Semi-state will also have No. 4 Mishawaka Marian (24-4) and No. 12 Andrean, 3-0 winners over Benton Central and Kankakee Valley Tuesday night.

West Noble, which claimed its first sectional title in 20 years by winning the Fairfield Sectional crown Saturday, dropped a 25-18, 25-19, 25-13 final to Dwenger. Maddie Schermerhorn led the offense with 11 kills and Kaylie Warble had nine for the Chargers. Nina Teel had 23 assists and one ace and Lauren Burns eight digs for the Chargers. who will lose five seniors.

Concord (28-7) saw its season come to an end Tuesday, losing 3-0 at home to LaPorte (29-8) in Class 4-A regional play. Comprising the Huntington North Semi-state will also be No. 1 Crown Point, a 3-0 winner over Munster, and No. 10 Zionsville against Fort Wayne Concordia, which took out Westfield and Fort Wayne Carroll by matching 3-1 scores.

Concord, which beat Warsaw and Elkhart Central Saturday to win the Warsaw Sectional title, dropped a 25-16, 25-18, 25-19 final to the Slicers. Junior Grace Kindy led the Concord offense with 11 kills and junior Ella Cunningham had eight. Cunningham had two aces, while Kindy and sophomore Keegan Thursby each had one. Junior KenadySullivan had 30 assists and 12 digs, while Thursby had 11 digs and junior Sage Iavagnilio eight. Cunningham had two blocks and senior Cortnee Coffin and sophomore Audrey Staggs each had one.

Concord, which loses two seniors, won the Northern Lakes Conference title and its first sectional championship in 17 years this season.
