
Berta Bowers, 89, Rochester, passed away at 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016 at Life Care Center of Rochester.
A New Year’s baby, Berta was born Jan. 1, 1927, in Munich, Maistrasse, Germany to Kreszenz and Johann Ortner Vogl.
Fraulein Berta Vogl and Mr. George F. Bowers were married in Fursten Feldbruck, Germany on June 30, 1955. George a member of the U.S. Air Force and his new bride Berta accompanied him to a variety of Air Force bases to see the world while serving our country. From Minot, North Dakota, Bunker Hill/Grissom AFB to Travis AFB in California, London, England and bases in Germany together they shared many adventures. One memory for both was seeing the Beatles live in London. While stationed at Bunker Hill, George and Berta cultivated a vibrant relationship to the Francis and Martha Carlson family. George was a cousin to Martha. The admiration was mutual and upon his retirement from the Air Force they settled in Rochester to be near their family.
With great patriotism and love for the USA, Berta became a naturalized United States Citizen on Dec. 18, 1959 in Orange County, New York. The Bowers moved to Rochester in 1968 from England. Sadly George passed away on March 26, 1972. Many will remember Berta as a sales clerk at Wiles Department Store. Later she work and retired from Hart Schaffner Marx. Berta was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Rochester.
Left to cherish Berta’s memory are her family: Denny and Mary Carlson; grandchildren: Shawn Carlson Sr. and wife Paula of Silver Lake; Nelson Carlson and companion Andrea Shufelt of Rochester; Dylan Carlson and companion Amanda Grossman of Akron; great grandchildren: Franz; Dennis and wife Deion; Shawn Jr., Layne, Kayla, Tristan, Olivia, Allyson, Mark; great-great grandchildren: D.J., Alaska, Aaliyah Belle; treasured friends: Chris Simonson, Jo Anne Burch and Francis Carlson all of Rochester; and her canine companion: Brandy the brindle Boxer.
Preceding Berta in death are her parents, husband, Heidi the Dachshund and Sadie the Boxer.
The funeral service for Berta Bowers will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 27 in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 West 18th Street, Rochester. Father Michael McKinney will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 9:30 through the hour of service in the funeral home. Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Community Resource Center Activity Fund.
