WARSAW — After a big day on the courts Wednesday, the Warsaw tennis team will play in one championship match this Saturday. The Tigers hosted the second round of the 2016 Northern Lakes Conference Boys Tennis Tournament Thursday night in what proved to be a tough night for both local team, Warsaw and Wawasee.
Hayden Steger and Spencer Britton will represent the Tigers in Saturday’s No. 2 doubles Championship. The duo won 6-2, 6-2 over Diego Torres and Nathanael Wertz of Goshen. Steger and Britton will face Jake Lovette and Freddy Buckingham of Concord in the title.
The only other Tiger to grab a victory was Colton Lind at No. 1 singles. Lind defeated Brandon Bailey of Elkhart Memorial 6-0, 6-0. Jacob Grewe will be Lind’s opponent in Saturday’s 5th place match.
Andrew Gauger (No. 2 singles) and David Homme (No. 3 singles) will play in third place matches Saturday. The No. 1 doubles team of Justin Stour and Ryan Wettschurack will also compete for third place.
As for the Warriors, things did not improve much from Wednesday’s showing. Wawasee dropped all five matches on the tournament’s opening day and were 1-4 on Thursday.
Nate Perek defeated NorthWood’s Landon Holland 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) to get a spot in the fifth place game against Northridge’s Gabe Rodino.
Dylan Staley (No. 1 singles) and Nate Haines (No. 2 singles) will both play in seventh place matchups. The same fate awaits both doubles teams for Wawasee, Tim Conley and Evan Krueger at No. 1 doubles and Graham Perek and Mason Gray at No. 2 doubles.
