WARSAW – Delaney Taylor notched a pair of goals and Warsaw pasted together a solid defensive effort in a 4-1 win over Goshen Tuesday night.

Taylor found the net on Warsaw’s first shot of the game, taking a pass from Julie Frazzetta and burying the opening chance in the seventh minute.

The match remained 1-0 through the half, and much like it did in the opening 40, Warsaw used its first opportunity of the second half to score again. Frazzetta, making an open run down the right side, was eventually taken down in the penalty area, drawing a penalty kick. Brenna Buhrt converted for the 2-0 lead. Seven minutes later, No. 7 in white corralled a poor Goshen clearance, made two smart touches on the ball and Taylor blasted home her second of the game.

Taylor also got an assist on Warsaw’s fourth goal in the 72nd minute when Abby Steffensmeier got loose in the Goshen 18 and was true to form. Steffensmeier was credited with an assist on Taylor’s second goal.

“Goshen brought a lot of effort and intensity, and for portions of the game I don’t think we matched it. But for other portions, thankfully, we did,” said Warsaw head coach Peter Lucht. “We were able to react and fight through. We finished opportunities, just an awesome Northern Lakes Conference match for us. Goshen has a historically strong defensive program, so it’s very nice on our end to be able to score four goals on them.”

Goshen’s only goal came in the 65th minute when Aniya Hartzler found some rare space in the Warsaw back third and pounded home a strike.

Warsaw’s defense held Goshen without a shot on target for the first 49 minutes of the match, and allowed just six shots on net in the game. Warsaw keeper Chloe Snow made five saves for the win.

Warsaw rattled off 14 shots on target, with Goshen keep Kassandra Rodriguez making nine stops.

“I was thrilled to see the girls be hungry,” Lucht said. “We saw some people really working and driving, looking to make their mark on the game.

“Our defense played really well, staying organized and recovering and overlapping. Breck (Jackson) and Dayle (Harvey) had great games. Dayle had a block that probably saved a goal. It was a good effort across the board from the back line.”

Goshen’s JV shut out Warsaw 4-0 in the day’s first matchup.

Warsaw (5-3, 3-0 NLC) will visit Homestead Thursday evening.
