SOUTH BEND – Jose Paulino celebrated his Chicago Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month honor by throwing a gem, leading South Bend to a 3-1 win over Great Lakes Monday at Four Winds Field.

Paulino gave up a leadoff home run to Darien Tubbs but then was locked in.

After Great Lakes took the 1-0 lead, the left hander retired 21 of the next 23 hitters before being removed from the game after seven strong innings. Paulino improved to 2-0 with the victory after striking out seven walking just one.

P.J.Higgins gave the Cubs the lead for a good with a two RBI single in the fifth inning scoring Andrew Monasterio and Tyler Alamo.

South Bend scored its first run of the game in the first inning when Albert Mineo hit a ground ball to second base that was mishandled. Connor Myers scored on the play.

South Bend completes its seven-game homestand by taking on Great Lakes Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
