ST. MARY’S, KAN. — A 10-year-old Kansas boy is selling lemonade to help his little brother.

Zane Jacobs has Duschenne Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic disorder which causes muscle degeneration. It has no known cure and Zane is in the stage of losing his ability to walk.

“The strength in his legs is going pretty rapidly,” said Kara Jacobs, mother of the two boys. “He’s also losing the strength in his arms and his shoulders. When he falls, he can’t stop himself, so we’ve had a broken nose, several head injuries.”

Wanting to help out, older brother Taegan encouraged the Jacobs family to sell lemonade to raise money for a wheelchair and wheelchair-accessible van.

So far, Taegan and his cousins have raised over $6,000 selling lemonade in towns such as Eudora, Lawrence and St. Mary’s.

Their goal is $44,000.

“The kids are absolutely having a blast. They feel like they’re doing something; they’re contributing to the family,” Jacobs said. “And they know how much we need this, they see that their brother struggles. They know he needs this wheelchair.”

The Jacobs have an online fundraising page at www.gofundme.com/vanforzane.
