COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. – The TinCaps were shut out for the 10th time this season in a 2-0 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) at Fifth Third Ballpark on Saturday night before 9,528 fans.

On West Michigan’s “Star Wars Night,” the force was with the pitching on both sides.

Whitecaps starter Kyle Dowdy (W, 6-1) blanked the TinCaps for six innings. Jordan Smith recorded six outs to bridge the gap to Yordy Cabrera (S, 1) for the ninth.

That isn’t to say, though, that Fort Wayne (7-10, 43-44) didn’t have its chances. On the contrary, the TinCaps did have seven hits — all singles — and drew three walks, plus a hit batter. But the visitors went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, leaving nine runners on base. They also had two runners thrown out on the bases, including one at the plate, and hit into a pair of double plays.

Center fielder Tyler Moore produced three of Fort Wayne’s hits.

West Michigan (7-8, 46-36) scored both of its runs in the third against Jerry Keel (L, 5-8). Rashad Brown bunted a run in and Will Allen brought home a runner on an infield single. Left-handed reliever Elvin Liriano pitched three scoreless innings of relief after Keel went the first five.

The four-game series is even at a game through the first two.

West Michigan will host Fort Wayne Sunday at 1 p.m.
