DAYTON, Ohio – Tyler Alamo belted a two-run home run to lead a 14-hit South Bend attack as the Cubs defeated the Dayton Dragons 11-1 on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Field. The Cubs completed a sweep of the second half-opening four-game series.

South Bend built a 5-0 lead over the first two innings, scoring two runs in the first and three more in the second. The Dragons scored in the bottom of the second when Brantley Bell singled, stole second and third, and scored on Jose Duarte’s two-out single to make it 5-1. But South Bend scored one run in the fourth before Alamo’s two-run homer in the seventh made it 8-1. They added three more in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Tanner Rainey (2-6) notched a career-high nine strikeouts but surrendered six earned runs in four innings to suffer the loss. He allowed 10 hits with one walk in his outing. Sandy Lugo allowed two runs in three innings before Braulio Ortiz worked one scoreless inning.

Conor Krauss was touch up for three runs in the ninth. Ironically, Dragons pitchers established a new season-high for most strikeouts in a nine-inning game with 15. Infielder Josciel Veras came in the game to get the final out in the top of the ninth and picked up the 15th strikeout.

The Dragons collected six hits. Reydel Medina was 2 for 4. Shed Long had a double for the only extra base hit.

South Bend (4-0), which allowed just two runs in the four-game series, returns home for a series Monday night against Lake County. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
