LANSING, Mich. – The Lansing Lugnuts defeated the TinCaps, 5-2, on a warm Wednesday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The hits were even at eight a piece in this game, but the difference proved to be what each team did with those hits.

Lansing (24-20) was 4-for-6 with runners in scoring position and only stranded two runners, while Fort Wayne (23-23) went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base.

TinCaps starter Jake Nix (L, 0-1) was perfect in four of the five innings he worked. Unfortunately for him, though, two runs allowed on four hits in the third proved costly as his offense didn’t score until the ninth inning. The 20-year-old Nix struck out six and didn’t walk a batter over his 63 pitches.

Meanwhile, Lugnuts starter Ryan Borucki (W, 1-1) pitched his way out of traffic in all six of his innings. Fort Wayne had at least one hit or a walk in every inning of the game.

But the TinCaps didn’t strike until the ninth against Patrick Murphy (S, 1), who worked a three-inning save. Down 5-0 after Lansing scored three runs in the seventh, right fielder Jhonatan Pena plated a pair with a bases-loaded bloop-single to right. That, however, was all Fort Wayne would get.

Center fielder Michael Gettys saw his eight-game hitting streak end, but he did reach base drawing two walks. Gettys also recorded his league-leading 10th outfield assist of the season, throwing Lansing’s Juan Kelly out at the plate in the third. Kelly attempted to score from second on a Max Pentecost two-out single.

Next Game for the TinCaps is Thursday, May 26, at Lansing, a 7:05 p.m. start.
