KOKOMO – There’s just one more hurdle left to state glory. In some cases, literally.
Regional rounds of the IHSAA state track tournament will take place Tuesday, specifically for area teams down at Kokomo High School.
The top four individuals become automatic qualifiers for the state finals June 3 in Bloomington. Focus has become as sharp as ever, with just one more round of tests left.
Warsaw has as good a chance as any, based off sheer numbers, to qualify individuals for the state finals. The Tigers are placed in 22 spots at Kokomo and a top-three seed in nine of those positions. Audrey Rich comes into the regional as the top overall seed in both the 100 (12.62) and 200 (25.44) and likely will anchor the 4×100 relay and possibly the 4×400 relay, Warsaw seeded second in both of those relays.
Warsaw’s 4×800 relay is seeded second and had Mia Beckham the top two-miler coming in at 11:16.14.
Whitko’s Kaitlyn Reed brings in the area’s other top seed, a 5-6 clearing in the high jump achieved last week at the Rochester Sectional. Warsaw’s Alexie Day, the Warsaw sectional champion, is seeded third and teammate Morgan Bruner is close behind in fifth.
Warsaw’s Sam Alexander is seeded second in the 100 by one-hundredth of a second behind Rich, and is fifth coming into long jump.
Wawasee’s Hannah-Marie Lamle is set to compete in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles as well as long jump. Teammate Alexis Mangas could be a wild card out in the discus and Katelyn Kennedy, the NLC shot put champion, needed a call-back in the shot but has another shot, literally, at regional.
Tippecanoe Valley has senior Lexi O’Connell chasing the school record in the 100 hurdles in her final go-round. Makayla Ruiz, the school record holder in shot put, comes in as a six-seed. Sarah Tucker will take her spin in the 100 trials.
Whitko’s Suzi Sickafoose will run in both the 200 and 400 dashes, and Brigit Nemitz was a call-back in the mile run.
Triton’s Abigail Powell slid into the 300 hurdles as the final call-back and teammate Katie Hepler will take her chances in pole vault.
Keep an eye on Fairfield’s Riley Miller and Jessica Miller, and on NorthWood freshman Riley Hershberger, who is the top seed in the 100 hurdles and second-seed in the 300 hurdles. NorthWood’s Erica Stutsman is also the top seed in the 400 dash.
Penn’s Mikaylah Woods could also be destined for great things as the top-seeded long jumper, among the top in the 200 dash and part of Penn’s top 4×400 relay team.
Action at Kokomo starts at 6 p.m. with field events and time trials starting shortly after.
