BREMEN – Whitko boys track coach Ron Cherry liked the team he had after April’s Goshen Relays. After Thursday night, good chance he really likes the team.
Cherry’s Wildcats claimed five championships and 12 athletes or relays place in the top three in what amounted to a 132-112 win over runner-up Plymouth in the team standings, Whitko’s second team championship in as many years.
Garrett Elder was a two-time champion, taking the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.31, with teammate Alex Wilson just off pace at 11.42 for second. Elder later claimed the long jump title with his best leap of 19-11.25. Wilson again was second with his top leap of 19-07.25. Elder also joined Zack Freel, Alex Morales and Gavin Powell to finish second in the 4×100 relay at 44.36.
Wilson claimed a regional spot with his 23.44 in the 200.
Morales would win a title in the 110 hurdles at 15.10, and teammate Brady Weeks fourth at 16.27. Weeks would come back to win the 300 hurdles at 41.98, teammate Shad Ebbinghouse shadowing in second at 43.26.
Wildcats Walker Hobbs and Gavin Howard went one-two in shot put, Hobbs winning at 50-3.50 and Howard at 48-1. Conner Sherwin added a runner-up spot in discus at 129-6 and Freel was third in high jump at 5-8.
Whitko also had RJ Patrick take sixth in pole vault with a 10-6 clearance, which was the third-best height but sixth on jumps and Howard was fifth in discus at 124-4.
Tippecanoe Valley’s Neil Clampitt had a tremendous day, placing second in the 200-meter dash at 23.20, third in long jump at 19-5.25 and was on Valley’s 4×400 relay with Gavin Good, Shay Merley and Jared Mikel for a 3:33.37 second-place time, and with Jon Fields, Good and Dakota Parker for a 45.00 third-place time.
Good was fourth in the long jump at 19-2.50 and Will Hassenplug was fourth in shot put at 40-11.50.
Triton only had four athletes place in the top eight. Trey Watkins was the lone Trojan to get out of the sectional round, winning discus with his top throw of 138-3. Ryan Horne was fifth in the shot put at 40-8.50, Ethan Berry seventh in long jump at 17-10.75, and Jeremy Jones seventh in the 100 at 11.84.
Of note from the sectional, Plymouth sophomore Nate Patterson continued to set the standard as the top high jumper in the state with another eye-popper Thursday, clearing 6-10 to win the event. Patterson is the top seed in the state, having already cleared 7-0 at the Goshen Relays earlier this year.
All qualifiers from the Bremen Sectional will compete next Thursday at the Warsaw Boys Track Regional.
