GOSHEN – Matt Thacker had been waiting for his Warsaw boys track team to put together a complete meet.

He definitely got his wish Thursday night.

The Tigers picked a pretty good time to perform close to perfection up and down their deep and talented lineup.

Warsaw made it six straight sectional championships in emphatic fashion by dominating the Goshen Sectional played out under perfect conditions at Foreman Field.

The Tigers won four events and scored in a plethora of other events to pile up a total of 147 points. Host Goshen was runner-up with 104.5 with NorthWood (91), Fairfield (64) and Elkhart Central (49) rounding out the top five in the final team standings in the 12-team field.

The top three finishers in each sectional event advance to the Warsaw Regional on May 26, which will feature qualifiers from sectionals at Goshen, Bremen, South Bend St. Joseph and Kokomo.

Dylan Childers was fourth in the shot put. He also was second in the discus for the Tigers.

To say that the mild-mannered Thacker was fired up to see his team perform in a true championship manner, one only had to witness him wildly cheering on Lucas Howett in the 3,200 meter run. Thacker raced across the infield, shouting and exhorting the sophomore in the next to last event of the night and with the team title already firmly in hand like it was a do-or-die event. Howett surged late to take third place in the race to give his team a 2-3 finish and an exclamation point on the night.

“We’ve talked the last week about having a complete meet,” explained Thacker as he received congratulations from several fellow sectional coaches. “Tonight, we were pretty close to perfection.

“I can’t say enough good things about our kids, our coaches and our parents. It’s one big teamwork from all of them. The effort tonight does not surprise me. With that being said and I don’t want to sound cocky, but I’m not shocked by the results. You always want to do well in a sectional and we did that tonight.”

“I think that it goes back to preparation, all the way back to November. A big thing too was how we performed at Southport. We went down there and had big performances and success and saw what we could do. The guys got a taste in their mouths there and that was big for us. From that meet on we took steps forward.”

The Tigers, who had won their sixth straight NLC Meet last Wednesday, won last year’s sectional title by just 12 points over runner-up Northridge.  Warsaw left no doubt Thursday night who was the cream of the crop in a tough sectional field in rolling to the program’s 27th title overall.

Warsaw got championship efforts on the track from the outstanding senior duo of Owen Glogovsky and Ross Armey. Glogovsky won the 1,600 title for the second straight year, clocking in a top time of 4:31.91 to easily outdistance freshman teammate Zeb Hernandez (4:38.20). Armey claimed the sectional crown in the 300 hurdles for the second straight season with a top effort of 39.17.

The Tigers also got a win from its 4 X 100 relay team as seniors Armey and Brandon Reinholt and juniors Rane Kilburn and Will McGarvey clocked a top time of 43.32.

“We were phenomenal on the track tonight,” noted Thacker. “Owen and Zeb and Lucas just stepped up big time for us. Ross was phenomenal in the hurdles. I thought that even though our 4 X 800 got fourth that they set the tone for us at the start. Even with Xavi slowed with an ankle injury, they still had a pr.

“We went 1-2 in the 1,600 with Owen and Zeb and then won the 4 X 100. That’s 28 points right there that gave us a big cushion in the meet.”

Reinholt was fifth in the 100 and sixth in the 200. Glogovsky was second and Howett third in the 3,200 with times of 9:58.49 and 10:03.96 respectively.

The 4 X 400 relay team of Armey, Kilburn, sophomore Tristan Larsh and Landan Perry took second in 3:27.28.  The 4 X 800 really team of junior Trent Thompson, sophomore Xavi Ramierez and freshmen Hernandez and William Robison was fourth in 8:17.09.

Individual sectional titles on the track went to NorthWood sophomore Brayton Yoder in the 100 (11.12), NorthWood senior Derek Parker in the 110 hurdles (14.62), NorthWood señior Bailey Messenger in the 200 (21.87), Columbia City senior Andrew McFarland in the 400 (48.34), Fairfield junior Brady Willard in the 800 (1:58.58), Fairfield junior Landon Miller in the 3,200 (9:33.99), Goshen in the 4 X 800 relay (8:14.05) and NorthWood in the 4 X 400 relay (3:25.49).

McFarland of Columbia City set the lone sectional record in his win in the 400. His time of 48.34 eclipsed the old mark of 48.9 set by Eric Brown of Wawasee in 2008.

Senior Mitch DeWitt of Fairfield won the long jump with an effort of 22-5. Goshen junior Rummel Johnson cleared 6-4 to win the high jump title. Goshen senior Jordan Holley won the discus with a top effort of 145-03 and then won the shot put with a throw of 49-05.25.
