WARSAW – It was raining sideways, then sleeting, and the wind was completely unpredictable other than it was blowing and blowing hard. Rozella Ford Golf Course was visibly in good shape, but the weather wasn’t Saturday. Northfield, however, wasn’t bothered in the least in taking the Three Rivers Conference Boys Golf Championship.
The Norse, led by individual medalist Austin Trump’s 77, shot a 335 to beat runner-up Rochester’s 341 to repeat as tourney champs. Tippecanoe Valley finished third at 374 and Whitko was sixth at 386 among the 10 teams at the conference tournament.
Rochester and Northfield both landed three golfers in the top 10, Rochester’s Killian Bailey posting a 78 for the second-best score of the tournament. Aaron Orr had an 85 and Jackson Sawyer an 87 for the Zebras. Braydon Schindler, last year’s TRC medalist, shot an 80 and Kameron Cole had an 88 for the champs.
Tippecanoe Valley, seeded fourth in the tourney, placed one higher on the strength of Jeremy Julian’s 88, eighth-best in the tournament and garnering him All-TRC honors. Rounding out the Valley scores were Cole Cumberland at 92, Trevor Neeley at 96, Chandler Newsome at 98 and Kane Stellar at 104.
Whitko’s day had two scores just outside the top 10, with Tim Gensch at 90 and Grady Clingerman at 91. Nic Rose was at 102, Kaleb Busz at 103 and Cade Bechtold at 105 for the Wildcats.
Rozella, the site of this year’s Warsaw Sectional on June 3, will bring back Northfield, Manchester, Tippecanoe Valley and Whitko to the course. Ironically, none of the teams in the TRC call Rozella home, to which Triton actually uses the course as the primary team.
Tippecanoe Valley will meet Northfield and Wabash again Tuesday while Whitko will face Fort Wayne Canterbury Wednesday.
