Warsaw Tennis: Tiger Pair Earn Title Shots In NLC Tourney
PLYMOUTH – The Warsaw girls tennis duo of Colette Smith and Ella Knight went into the conference tournament as two of the top players in the league.
The pair will now be playing for championships in the event on Friday.
Sophomore singles players Smith and Knight each collected semifinal wins Thursday night in the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament during day two action at Plymouth.
The outstanding twosome will now compete for NLC Tourney titles in singles finals action on Friday as the tournament is set to conclude at Warsaw.
Smith, the top-seeded No. 2 singles player, rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over NorthWood junior Hannah Walter in the semifinals Thursday. Smith will face Elkhart Memorial senior and No. 2 seed Taylor Freedline in the finals. Freedline topped Plymouth junior Ashley Harrell 6-2, 6-0 in the other semifinal match.
Knight proved her mental mettle Thursday night. The No. 3 singles player, who was the No. 2 seed, rallied to top Northridge junior Taylor Sellers 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in her semifinal match. Knight will square off with Plymouth sophomore Cortni Cook, the top seed, in the finals. Cook beat Concord freshman Regan Landis 6-3, 6-4 in semifinal action.
Warsaw, which went 4-1 on the opening day of the tourney Wednesday, saw No. 1 singles player Liza Lewis and its No. 1 doubles duo of Hannah Rice and Athena Schlitt lose in semifinal play. Sophomore Lewis lost a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Memorial junior standout and top seed Krystal Grubb. Sophomore Rice and junior Schlitt dropped a 6-2, 6-3 semifinal match to the NorthWood team of junior Jama Rice and sophomore Kennedy Wiens. Lewis is slated to play Alana Brubaker of Concord for third place on Friday, while Rice and Schlitt will face the Elkhart Memorial team of Layla Jojo and Maggie Dickerson for third place.
The Warsaw No. 2 doubles team of senior Rosie Fleming and sophomore Grace Miller finished in seventh place. The duo defeated the Wawasee team of sophomore Courtney Larson and freshman Kendra Doerr 8-0 Thursday.
Plymouth, which won the NLC regular season title at 6-1, will have three positions competing for championships today at Warsaw in the final round. Cook will compete for the No. 3 singles title, while both of the Plymouth doubles teams will be in the finals. Junior Kendall Dreibelbis and sophomore McKenzie Scheetz, the top seed, will play for the No. 1 doubles crown. They beat the Memorial team of sophomore Layla Jojo and junior Maggie Dickerson 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals Thursday. The No. 2 duo of senior Kayla Hoober and sophomore Leah Smith will also be in the finals after they topped the Concord team of junior Allison Murphy and freshman Keegan Thursby 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals.
Memorial, which went 5-2 during the regular season to tie Warsaw and NorthWood for second place, has Grubb, Freedline and its No. 2 doubles team of sophomore Hannan Hakim and junior Mackenzie Williams in the finals. Hakim and Williams topped the No. 1 seeded NorthWood team of sophomore Betsy Nunemaker and junior Amanda Rhoade 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinal round.
NorthWood will be represented in the finals by Sydney Wysong at No. 1 singles and its No. 1 doubles team of Rice and Wiens. Wyong, a senior, beat Concord junior Alana Brusker 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in the semifinal round to earn a spot in the finals at the top singles position versus Grubb.
Wawasee finished in eighth place at all five of its positions, including senior Jazlyn Gelhausen at No. 1, freshman Peyton Rookstool at No. 2 and freshman Meg Heinisch at No. 3 in singles play, and its No. 1 doubles team of senior Charity Parker and sophomore Kabrea Rostochak and its No. 2 doubles team of Larson and Doerr.
