PIERCETON — Yesterday, May 9, Lutheran EMS came to the Pierceton Town Council to honor first responders and dispatchers for aiding in a successful “field delivery” on April 16th.

Paramedic Darrell Sopher, told a story about a normal night on the job, that turned out to be anything but. Sopher said he and his partner were working Warsaw that night and had a high school EMT student on a ride along. Sopher said he and his partner had just come back from a call when the student said, “Yeah, I want something really cool,” and Sopher’s partner responded with, “I’d love to deliver a baby tonight.”

No sooner than those were spoken, they received a call from dispatch saying a women was in labor and was “showing.” Sopher said his heart sank. They went to the residence of the mother-to-be, Brittany Prater. At this point, Sopher began to praise the “amazing” dispatchers the county has. He told everyone at the meeting that Dispatcher Jeanne Thomas guided Sopher, his partner and three first responders with step-by-step instructions on how to deliver a baby.

In other business:

• Tax abatement renewals for Paragon Medical and Shiloh Die Cast Midwest LLC was approved.
• The bid for electrical improvements for the sewer plant was awarded to James Jackson, Bluffton, for $570,840.
• Chip Hill, town manager, recommended taking the bids for maintaining the fire station roof ($48,698) and for the water plant roof ($13,836) from roofing contractor, Preferred, Inc in Fort Wayne.
• Baker presented the monthly Pierceton Fire/Rescue Program statistics. He said the times from dispatch to enroute were improving.
• Baker also asked the council to add Occupational Safety and Health Administration respiratory protection plan program physicals to the 2017 budget at $44/per person.
