SYRACUSE — Waiting an extra 24 hours and a change of venues certainly did some favors for the Wawasee softball team.

The Warriors played on their home field as the road team against county rival Warsaw Thursday night. Wawasee defeated the Tigers 8-0 earlier this season and improved upon that effort with a 22-0 throttling of Warsaw this time around.

The Northern Lakes Conference game was postponed due to inclement weather on Wednesday and then was moved from Warsaw to Wawasee on Thursday due to unplayable field conditions on the Tigers’ home field.

Meghan Fretz threw all five innings for the “road” team, surrendering one hit and striking out eight batters with no walks. Fretz also led Wawasee with four hits, including a three-run homer, and five RBIs.

Danielle Gunkel and Amber Lemberg each had three hits for the Warriors while three others had a pair of hits a piece. Wawasee, which has now won seven straight games, had 18 hits in the victory and scored 11 runs in the fourth inning.

Taylor Sleeth had Warsaw’s lone hit. The Tigers committed 10 errors in the loss and Warsaw pitchers issued eight walks.

Freshman Courtney Chookie took the pitching loss for the Tigers.

Wawasee (15-3, 7-1) will travel to Elkhart Memorial and Warsaw (4-13, 4-4) travels to Goshen in NLC matchups Friday night.
