INDIANAPOLIS — Despite improvements in playground design, more children are getting seriously hurt.

Government data shows a significant increase in playground-related head injuries between 2005 and 2013.

About two-thirds of the incidents occurred at schools and recreational sports facilities.

Boys accounted for 58 percent of hospital visits, and more than half of injured children were between five and nine years old.

Accidents were most common on monkey bars, playground gyms and swings.

Experts say better strategies are needed to improve playground surfaces and maintain equipment.
