Softball Crushes Triton

In a matchup of highly regarded club in their respective classes, it wasn’t much of a game Saturday in Bourbon. Wawasee smacked 15 hits and put the run rule on Triton in an 11-0 final in five innings.

Eight Warriors had at least one hit, led by three apiece from Kylee Rostochak and Meghan Fretz. Rostochak scored three runs and Fretz drove in four, ripping three doubles.

Danielle Gunkel, Amber Lemberg and Madie Wilson all had two hits, Lemberg and Gunkel combining for four RBIs.

Lemberg picked up the win, working three innings and striking out six. Fretz pitched the final two innings, fanning a pair.

Hannah Woodard and Courtney Jennings each doubled for Triton, which entered the game having won back-to-back games.

Wawasee (6-1) will enter Northern Lakes Conference play Monday hosting Warsaw while Triton (2-2) steps into Hoosier North Athletic Conference play hosting Knox Monday at Keyser Field.

Warriors Active At North Side Relays

Wawasee got in some work against some of the best boys track athletes in Fort Wayne Saturday, competing at the North Side Relays.

The Warriors had 12 athletes place in the top 12 in the various, and three within the top five of the events to which they competed. Wawasee’s distance medley were fourth in its heat with a time of 12:00.43, run by Spencer Hare, Dylan Hepler, Luke Griner and Sam Griner. The Warriors’ 4×100 relay of Cole VanLue, Alec Rosbrugh, Michael Katzer and Paul Mendoza posted a 45.39 for fifth, and the 4×200 was also fifth with VanLue, Katzer, Mendoza and Jacob Moore running a 1:40.86.

Katzer was sixth in the B race of the 100 dash, going 12.29, Brady Robinson was sixth in pole vault at 10-0 and the sprint medley team of VanLue, Moore, Rosbrugh and Katzer were sixth at 1:47.37.

Wawasee was 17th overall of 17 teams with 10.5 points. Fort Wayne Carroll won the team title with 190 points.

Wawasee will compete again Thursday at home in Northern Lakes Conference action against Elkhart Memorial and NorthWood.

Warriors Win Mini Northrop Invite

Only three teams were involved in the varsity role call for the Northrop Golf Invite, and Wawasee said ‘why not?’ and won it with a 347, besting host Northrop (380) and Whitko (382).

Jeffrey Moore led the Warriors with a 75, which was good for medalist of the match. Cal Heinisch added an 84 for second overall, and 94s were both posted from Kyle Weideman and Cameron Adams. Jayce Boatwright had a 104 in the five tab for Wawasee.

The Wawasee JV finished fifth among nine teams in the junior contest. Austin Shrack led the green and gold with a 92.

Whitko had Tim Gensch shoot an 87 to finish third overall, followed by Grady Clingerman at 92, Cade Bechtold at 100 and Kaleb Busz at 103.

With its season opener out of the way, Wawasee with take on its first dual Tuesday at Central Noble. Whitko golfs Monday at North Miami.
