Warriors One-Hit Bruins In Opener
The Wawasee baseball team had a stellar opening to its season Tuesday evening. The Warriors allowed just one hit to visiting Bethany Christian en route to a 14-0 win in five innings.
Lucas Garza and Gavin Bontrager combined for the effort on the mound for the Warriors. Garza picked up the win in three innings of work giving up no hits, walking two and fanning five.
Chase Rookstool was a dynamo for Wawasee offensively. The senior smashed a homer, recorded six RBIs, a team high, and scored three runs. Jairus Boyer was perfect at the plate, going 2-2, with a walk and also scored three runs. Jamie Slabaugh has a pair of RBIs on one hit.
Wawasee (1-0) returns to action Wednesday night at home against Wabash.
Tennis Squad Opens With A Victory
The girls tennis team started its 2016 campaign in Lagrange on Tuesday. The ladies picked up a 4-1 victory over Lakeland behind some impressive performances by the team’s younger core.
Freshmen Peyton Rookstool and Meg Heinisch picked up wins in straight sets at one and two singles. Sophomore Kabrea Rostochak did the same at three singles.
At No. 2 doubles Madison Cooper and Brooke Fick, both seniors, earned a win in straight sets.
“Great win to start the year off right,” offered Wawasee head coach Shane Staley.
Wawasee (1-0) plays Wednesday at Central Noble.
The JV team earned a 6-1 win.
