MISHAWAKA – It was vintage Anne Secrest Tuesday night.
The Tippecanoe Valley basketball star was her usual hard-working, double-double self on the hardwood.
Secrest, following another hoops victory, was as humble as an All-Star could be off the court.
The junior standout played a big role as her Red team defeated the Gray team by a 107-77 count in the McDonald’s Michiana All-Star Game played in the Wiekamp Center on the Bethel College campus.
Secrest finished with 10 points and tied for game-high honors with 12 rebounds as the Red team dominated the fifth annual All-Star affair.
“My main two goals tonight were to have fun and try and get better,” said Secrest. “It’s an honor to be chosen to play in this game. It’s just a lot of fun to come out here and play with high-calibre players and get that kind of experience to showcase your talents.”
The Red team used a huge first-quarter effort to take control right from the get go. The game was tied once at 2-2 before the Red rolled to a 15-5 lead. South Bend Clay senior McKayla Baylor scored 12 points in the opening period as the Red team built a 33-15 lead. The Red squad was in complete control by halftime with a 55-33 advantage.
“We were not worried about the score,” noted Secrest of the dominating performance by her team. “It was more about coming out and just playing and having fun with this.”
Secrest was recently named the North Group of the Junior All-Star team after another outstanding season for the Vikings. The 6-0 center led Valley to a 25-2 mark, which included a second straight Three Rivers Conference title and a second consecutive Class 3-A sectional title. Secrest, who averaged 16.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game for the Vikings, was named the Ink Free News Player of the Year for the second year in a row for her accomplishments.
Baylor led the winners with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Kaitlyn Marenyi of Class 4-A state champion Penn had 17 points for the Red team. Lauren Grewe of Mishawaka netted 13 points and Nicole Konieczny of South Bend St. Joseph finished with 11.

Sophomore Brooke McKinley of Northridge had nine points for the winning Red team. West Noble standout Becca Schermerhorn was selected for the Red team, but could not play due to an injury.
Micaela Box of Bremen tossed in a game-high 31 points for the Gray team. She hit 11-21 shots, including 4-8 from distance. Penn senior Camryn Buhr, a Lehigh recruit and Indiana All-Star, had 17 points.
Goshen’s Tahya Bruce scored six points for the Gray squad.
Secrest, who led Valley to a Class 3-A state runner-up finish in 2015, has made a verbal commitment to play at Youngstown State University. For now, she is focused on getting back into the gym and working for some lofty goals for her senior season.
“My college commitment will not stop me from working hard this offseason,” remarked Secrest. “I want to focus on the finer details of my game, things like footwork. I want my game to be consistent all the time. I’m looking to extend my shooting range, which is a work in progress.
“Being a Junior All-Star this year was one of my goals. The major goal now is winning State. We have done everything else as a team. That and individually I have a goal to be an Indiana All-Star next year.”
